  1. Find a quiet place for your children to study, this should be their space.


  2. Praise your child when they do something well.  If they need help or struggle on an assignment be positive while encouraging them to ask for help.


  3. Encourage your child to do their best in everything that they do.  Everyone makes mistakes and we are not perfect.  Children need the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them.


  4. Make education a priority, monitor your student’s homework, and encourage them to attend school every day. Get involved with your child’s school and contact the teachers.  If school is important to you, it will be important to your child.


  5. Ask your students about school and what they learned in their classes.  Ask to see their classwork, how they did on their tests, writing samples and any other assignments that they worked on.


  6. Help your child prioritize their assignments. Students should spend about 45 to 60 minutes at a time on studying.  Allow them to take a break, go outside, talk to a friend on the phone or eat a snack. Then have them go back to their assignments.


  7. To be successful and improve their performance in the school:
    • Read the assignments that your student is given. 
    • Keep a list of new vocabulary and make flash cards.
    • Have them use the words in a sentence. 
    • Proofread assignments before they turn them in.
    • Students should answer written and oral questions in complete sentences to develop academic Language.
    • Review the material and notes before a test or quiz.


  8. Make calendar that list the deadlines for school projects, test dates, and report card dates. Include study time and after-school activities.  Make studying a priority.


  9. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, make sure they eat something in the morning to get them engaged in the classroom.
